The ‘Peacock’ in stable condition after cardiac arrest

Well-known poet WS Rendra was rushed to hospital last week for a heart attack and is being monitored at the Cardio Vascular Unit (CVC) of the Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU) of the Harapan Kita Heart Hospital in West Jakarta.

“His condition is stable but we continue to monitor his blood pressure,” a nurse at the Harapan Kita Hospital, Dea, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Rendra, nicknamed Peacock, was brought to the hospital on June 30.

When the Post contacted Rendra’s wife, Ken Zuraida, about the noted poet and playwright, she could not comment further.





Rendra, whose real name is Willibrordus Surendra Broto Rendra, was born in Surakarta, Central Java on Nov. 7, 1935.

He has produced several noted works including; Empat Kumpulan Sajak (Four Poems 1961-1978), Ia Sudah Bertualang (He had traveled 1963), Blues Untuk Bonnie (Blues for Bonnie,1971), Sajak Sajak Sepatu Tua (Old shoes Poem, 1972), Pamphleten van een Dichter (Holland, 1979), State of Emergency (Australia, 1980), Potret Pembangunan Dalam Puisi (Portrait of development on poems, 1980), Mempertimbangkan Tradisi (Considering tradition, 1983), Mencari Bapa (Looking for Father, 1985), Nyanyian Orang Urakan (Eccentric people’s song 1985).

He has written short stories and dramas that led to several awards; Orang-orang di tikungan jalan (People at a crossroads) received an award from Yogyakarta Culture and Education Agency Award in 1954; a rhyme titled Balada Orang-orang Tercinta (Loved ones ballad, 1957); and his book Tentang Bermain Drama (a book on drama, 1970) which resulted in an Arts Award from the Culture and Education Ministry.

Rendra also established Bengkel Theater in Yogyakarta 1967 and in Depok 1995.

He married to Sunarti Suwandi on March 31, 1959 and has five children: Teddy Satya Nugraha, Andreas Wahyu Wahyana, Daniel Seta, Samuel Musa, and Klara Sinta.

He married his second wife Bendoro Raden Ayu Sitoresmi Prabuningrat, a princess of Yogyakarta Royal Palace on Aug. 12, 1970 and decided to became a Muslim. They had four children: Yonas Salya, Sarah Drupadi, Naomi Srikandi, and Rachel Saraswati.

He divorced his two wives after getting married with Ken Zuraida in 1976 who gave him two children: Isaias Sadewa and Maryam Supraba.

His latest work titled Suluk Hijau was presented to celebrate the Forestry Ministry’s 25th anniversary in March 2008.

US Stocks Surge to Highest Level of Year on Housing News
