The thrilling shootout that marked the counterterror police force’s raid on a group of terror suspects in Beji village in the Central Java town of Temanggung on Friday and Saturday proves a trauma for people who live in the neighborhood.
Sumadi and his wife Tri Sutriyati said they could not sleep throughout the night as the police kept them from their home, where they had left their three small children for daily work. Sutriyati said she could not stop crying as she was afraid of her children’s safety.
“We were collecting grass for our cattle when the raid began before the dusk on Friday. We heard explosions and an exchange of fire near our house, but the police did not allow us to meet our children,” said Sumadi, whose house is located near the terror suspects’ hide-out.
The family finally regrouped after the raid ended on Saturday morning.
Another resident, Yayuk, was also separated from her nine-year-old daughter Dila Aditya during the raid, which lasted over 12 hours. Yayuk said she left her daughter alone at home as her husband was in Yogyakarta.
An elementary school near the terrorists’ hide-out was closed on Saturday for security reasons. “There is no class today as the school is closed,” said fourth-year student Nita Fitriani.
