Chris John’s title fight moved to Jakarta

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 05/14/2010 11:03 PM | Sports
Indonesian world featherweight champion Chris John will fight his contender Fernando David Saucedo of Argentina in Jakarta, instead of Bali.

Promoter Zaenal Thayeb said Friday that Chris’ Australian manager and trainer Craig Christian had decided to move the bout to Jakarta.

“I will remain the promoter, but the event organizer will be a foreigner who lives in Jakarta,” Zaenal said as quoted by kompas.com.

He said the match would take place in the third week of July.

The right to broadcast the match has been awarded to private channel RCTI.

Chris has said he preferred to defend his World Boxing Association title in June, but RCTI said the date did not suit it due to its World Cup program from mid-June to mid-July.

The match was originally scheduled for May 22 in Denpasar, but was delayed after Chris suffered an injury during training. He will leave for Perth in Australia for another session of training at the end of this month.

"The markets are reacting to the news today in the context of other things they've been seeing and reading in recent weeks, and that's that the economy does appear to have hit a bottom," said David Resler, chief economist at Nomura Securities. Investors reacted positively to earnings reports from Ford, Ebay, AT&T and higher sales of Apple's new iPhone.
