Muhammadiyah calls for thorough investigation into hotel bombings

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Sat, 07/18/2009 10:33 PM | National

Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamsuddin called Saturday for a thorough investigation into Friday’s bomb attacks on JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta, which killed at least eight people and injured more than 50 others.

"Security authorities should probe the case thoroughly and find the mastermind behind the bombings,” Din Syamsuddin said as quoted by Antara state news agency.

He appealed to all parties to avoid connecting the terror attacks with the recent presidential election. All parties, especially the political elite group, he said, should show their statesmanship and capability to calm the people instead.

Din said the police should find no difficulties in uncovering perpetrators of the attacks as a suspected bomber had stayed in JW Marriott Hotel and might have assembled the bombs inside his hotel room.

He also said Muhammadiyah Islamic organization believed the bombing incident had nothing to do with religion, especially Islam.

"No party should link Friday's bombings to Islam. Terror is terror, crime is crime. If it is linked to Islam, it will certainly hurt the feelings of Muslims.”

Qory, the first woman representing the strongly Islamic region of Aceh to win the title, made no apology for publicly rejecting the jilbab or Muslim headscarf during the pageant’s final night in Jakarta, playing it down as a “misunderstanding”. “Perhaps it was a mistake to make such a statement, but honestly I have never worn a jilbab all my life,” the 18-year-old French literature student from the University of Indonesia told Waspada Online during a visit to Medan, North Sumatra, a few days after her win. Her responses to the judges’ questions have upset many people, particularly religious leaders in her home province. In the contest’s final stage, she was asked why she was not wearing a headscarf like previous contestan
